April 30th — RFSTS was able to site down with Councilmember Gennaro, who represents District 24 in Queens. The Councilman is a member of the Environmental Protection and Sanitation and Solid Waste committees (among others). This meeting enabled our group to highlight our concerns regarding the proposed 91st Street MTS on environmental, cost, and safety grounds. We look to continuing our dialogue with Councilman Gennaro who was very open to our concerns.

April 30th — RFSTS had a great meeting with the Public Advocate, Bill De Blasio. The meeting focused on a number of issues regarding the proposed 91st Street MTS, including costs, health and safety. We anticipate scheduling a tour of the area with Mr. de Blasio in May to more clearly show how dangerous and wrong-headed the idea of placing an industrial waste transfer station in the middle of a park and residential community.

On April 26th, Our Town published an article on the fight over the City’s plans regarding the two waste transfer sites the City wants to build which could be safety hazards for aircraft arriving and departing La Guardia Airport. While 91st and York Avenue is not normally thought of as close to La Guardia, it is in the FAA’s standard perimeter concerning bird attractant limitations.

On April 25th, RFSTS filed an amicus brief in the New York State Supreme Court supporting Gracie Point Community Council’s leave to appeal their lawsuit versus the City. The main points are 1- the health and environment of one neighborhood will be destroyed for the sake of others, 2- the City is depending on a faulty premise in its “borough equity” assumptions regarding whether or not Manhattan garbage goes to other boroughs, and 3- the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has paid undue deference to the New York City Department of Sanitation in relying on their data and analysis. Please click on the link to read this insightful brief.

During the first week of April, we met with three different City Council Members. Our first meeting on April 2nd was with Council Member Letitia James of District 35 who is also the Chairperson of the Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management. On April 3rd, the group met with Council Member Dominic Recchia Jr. of District 47 who is the Chairman of the Committee on Finance. Finally, on April 4th, we met with Council Member Maria del Carmen Arroyo of District 17, who is a member of the Land Use Committee, as well as the Sanitation and Solid Waste Management Committee. Our goal in these meetings is to introduce our group, and our cause to areas outside of our immediate community. We believe it is important that other City residents learn the facts regarding the proposed 91st Street MTS facility, and why all City residents should be opposed to the 91st Street MTS.
